Tiger Academy - General Information
MONASH TIGERS JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM – invitation only
The Monash Tigers operate a junior development program commencing with our Tiger Talent Squad which progresses into our Tiger Academy.
The Tiger Talent Squad (TTS) operates throughout May and June each year. The TTS squad is approximately 50-60 young players ranging from 13-18 years of age who have been identified through cricket pathways program, regional representative sides, partner clubs and club contacts across the region and country Victoria.
The club regularly receives emails from young players and their families advising us of the progress of young players and talent that can be found outside of these programs. In these instances it is very useful for us if you provide you’re My Cricket player number so that we can assess how you are fairing against the development squad players we are already tracking.
With the large number of emails the club receives the My Cricket data provides a reasonable (but not the only source) of information and comparative data for us to use in assessing who we should invite to our development program.
TIGER TALENT SQUAD – invitation only
The TTS is an invited group of young players predominantly but not exclusively from the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
Participating in two groups based on age, the players are taken through 3 sessions with coaches and players from the Monash Tigers, focusing on different skill and game scenario's.
The program enables Tiger coaches and players to pass on tips to upcoming players and allows us to keep an eye on developing talent.
These sessions are held in late May and June.
TIGER ACADEMY – invitation only
From the TTS a number of players are invited to progress to the Tiger Academy which includes preseason and in-season sessions with the Monash Tigers. The key focus is on participation in Academy games played on Sunday’s in the Mercantile Cricket Association Sunday A Grade competition.
These game opportunities are played in a team that has a majority of the players from the Academy then a mix of existing and former Richmond Cricket Club players who have given their time to mentor our developing list.
In-season sessions are held at Central Reserve Waverley from 4:30pm prior to senior training. Academy games are played across Melbourne, with home games at Central Reserve.
The Monash Tigers’ Academy was developed as program to enable both players and coaches to work together over a period of one to two years with a view to progressing into the senior club.
Whilst a player is in the Academy there may be (and has been) opportunities based on form to play games in the Premier Cricket competition.
However the aim of the Academy is to ease players into a high level Premier club environment and to receive coaching from Premier cricketers and coaching staff.
As young players have demands of schooling, club and representative cricket the program is designed to accommodate those requirements and take pressure of young players, particularly whilst in the important VCE years of their education.
Our approach is to allow the boys to play at their local club or school on Saturdays and rotate through the Academy side on Sundays.
Players are not locked into the club and do not require a clearance or to leave their club to participate. In fact we believe the program enables the players to have the best of both by being exposed to high performance coaching and playing requirements whilst still enjoying the mate-ship that club and school cricket provides.
